LAWRENCE—Just weeks into the job and facing a proposed $5.8 million operating deficit he inherited, today Lawrence Township Trustee Russell Brown outlined a plan to begin correcting the Lawrence Township Fire Department’s budget situation without laying off any department personnel.
Brown, who was elected to fill the vacancy in the Lawrence Township Trustee’s Office on September 21, 2009, will formally present his budget modifications tonight to the Lawrence Township Advisory Board. The seven-member panel will then vote on the plan.
“Following my election, I began to review the department’s fiscal situation – and what I found was startling. In addition to years of borrowing money to pay operating costs, this year’s proposed budget contained an operating budget deficit that nearly doubled from last year’s deficit. Obviously, that type of on-going, rapid debt growth is not sustainable and it must be addressed immediately.”
“I requested the help of district representatives of International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 416, the fire chief and fire fighters to putLawrence Township on a path towards fiscal sustainability – and that’s the plan we are presenting today.”
